I shoot photos and travel and write some more and talk on the phone and interview people and edit and then I write some more.
The 31 Voices project: It started in 2006. I was looking back on several years with hundreds of hours of counseling I'd had, free, from our state-wide network of domestic violence agencies here in Iowa. They brought me back to life, after a decade of downward spiral.
I ran the numbers and figured... hmm... they'd given me multiple thousands of dollars of value. And my life. So I called them, once more, and said: "I'm pretty much on my feet now. What can I do to help?"
Voila, here we are, three years later: The 31 Voices project, which now includes: newspaper stories, book ("31", May 2010), quilt project, speakers bureau with traveling photo exhibit. Plus me, driving around the state all October in 2008 and again this year, setting up exhibits of the full-scale portrait gallery and stories.
And for me? It's nice to feel useful. My whole oddball life somehow prepared me to do this very interesting project.
